19/21 | U - Al and Bill lapping seal for cylinder by rotating head with grinding compound back and forth and rotating it around Return to MSR&LHA Home page |
The first of two shots of Bill and Al enjoying their sit-down-job. When Climax 1551 was taken down, it was found that all four lapped cylinder seals had at some point failed (bolts vibrated lose?) and the resulting leak was allowed to continue for a long period of time. Eventually the steam cut (eroded) grooves into the once smooth lapped surfaces, and a thick gasket was applied to the joint in order for the locomotive engineer to see where he was going. Both the top and bottoms of both cylinders are to receive this treatment.
